Toilet Partition Coat Hooks & Door Bumpers in Cairo

Coat hooks and door bumpers are the last items specified on a partition project and the first to cause a complaint. A hook with no return stop leaves a protrusion at eye level on the back of a cubicle door. A door with no bumper slams against the pilaster face on every hard opening. Neither failure is expensive to prevent at specification stage. Both are expensive to fix after the installation is complete and the facility is in use. This page explains what to specify and why.

Coat Hooks: What Goes Wrong and Why

The return stop problem

A single coat hook without a return stop protrudes at roughly the same height as the face and eyes of a child or a person bending over. When the door swings open, the hook is exposed at whatever angle the door reached. In a busy facility, the combination of an unguarded hook and a door opening into the cubicle is an incident waiting to happen.

A return stop is a secondary arm that projects below and slightly forward of the main hook. It catches anything on the hook if the hook rotates downward and prevents the hook from lying flat against the door face when empty. Every coat hook in a commercial toilet block or changing room should have one.

Metal grade in humid environments

Chrome-plated and zinc alloy coat hooks corrode in changing room and toilet block humidity within two years. The chrome lifts at the mounting points first, where moisture is trapped under the fixing. Stainless steel or high-grade satin aluminium does not follow this pattern. The cost difference between a correct specification and a replacement programme at two years is not small.

Door Bumpers: What They Do and When You Need Them

What a door bumper does

A door bumper is a rubber or nylon stop that absorbs the impact when the cubicle door reaches its full open extent. Without one, the door edge contacts the pilaster face at speed on every hard opening. Over thousands of cycles, this damages the panel face at the contact point, loosens hinge fixings from the accumulated shock, and dents or chips the door edge.

Floor bumper vs. door-edge bumper

Floor bumpers are mounted on the floor at the door sweep point and stop the door before it contacts the pilaster. They are simple to install and easy to replace when worn. Door-edge bumpers are mounted on the door edge itself and contact a pad on the pilaster face. They require the door and pilaster to be correctly aligned to work as intended. Floor bumpers are the more reliable option for most commercial installations. Door-edge bumpers are preferred in facilities where the floor finish makes a floor-mounted fitting impractical.

Where These Are Used in Cairo

Gym and sports club changing rooms across Heliopolis, New Cairo, Nasr City, and Maadi where coat hooks take constant use and humidity accelerates corrosion on the wrong metal. School changing rooms where impact from bags and equipment on doors is higher than in office washrooms. Hotel spa changing areas where the visual quality of every fitting is part of the overall guest experience. Clinic and hospital toilet blocks where easy-clean surfaces and no protrusion hazards are part of the facility brief.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a coat hook return stop? A return stop is a secondary arm on the coat hook that catches items if the hook rotates downward and prevents the hook from protruding at a dangerous angle when the door is open. It is a standard safety requirement for commercial toilet and changing room installations.

Why do coat hooks corrode in changing rooms? Chrome-plated and zinc alloy hooks are not rated for humid environments. The plating lifts at the fixing points and the base metal corrodes. Stainless steel SS304 or SS316 does not corrode in changing room or toilet block conditions.

What is the difference between a floor bumper and a door-edge bumper? A floor bumper is mounted on the floor at the door sweep point and stops the door before it contacts the pilaster. A door-edge bumper mounts on the door edge and contacts a pad on the pilaster face. Floor bumpers are simpler and more reliable for most installations.

Do I need a door bumper if I have a self-closing hinge? Yes. A self-closing hinge returns the door to closed but does not prevent hard openings from slamming the door edge into the pilaster. A bumper is still required to protect the panel faces and hinge fixings from impact damage.

What metal grade for coat hooks in a shower block? Stainless steel grade 316. Grade 304 handles standard humid changing rooms, but for shower blocks and areas with direct water contact, specify 316.

Can coat hooks be retrofitted to an existing partition? Yes. Single and double coat hooks with return stops are surface-mounted to the door face with standard fixings. They can be added to or replaced on existing doors without disassembling the cubicle.

How many coat hooks per cubicle door? One single hook with return stop is standard. For changing room cubicles where users need to hang both an outer garment and a bag, a double hook or two single hooks at different heights is the practical specification.

Do you supply these separately or only as part of a full partition project? Both. We supply individual hooks and bumpers to contractors and facility managers for replacement or retrofit, and as part of a complete partition project hardware package.

What size bumper do I need? Standard bumpers fit most commercial partition systems. If you are replacing a bumper on an existing system, bring the old fitting or a photo of the door sweep clearance and we will confirm the right size.

Can the wrong hook damage the partition panel? A hook without a return stop that is mounted too high can catch on the door frame edge and transfer force to the mounting point over time, which loosens the fixing and eventually damages the door face around it. The correct hook in the right position eliminates this.
