What compact HPL does differently
Compact HPL is manufactured without a substrate. The panel is solid phenolic resin and kraft paper through its entire thickness, pressed at high temperature until the layers fuse completely. Cut an edge anywhere and the cross-section looks identical throughout. Water has nowhere to enter because there is no material interface to exploit.

Specifying a Compact HPL Worktop Correctly
Thickness
12mm handles standard worktop spans with supporting cabinetry below. Specify 20mm for unsupported spans over 900mm, for edge profiles that need depth to look balanced, or for surfaces that will take heavy impact.
Edge detail
The three common details are square-edge with a radius corner, post-formed (a curved profile at the front edge), and layered face-edge for a thicker appearance without the full 20mm panel cost. Post-formed edges must be specified at the order stage. They cannot be retrofitted on site.
Sink cutouts and backsplash
Minimum 6mm corner radius at any internal corner of a sink cutout. Square internal corners concentrate stress and crack under load over time. This is the most common installation error on compact HPL worktops. For the backsplash, specify the same material from the same batch as the worktop surface to guarantee colour consistency.

The practical difference between compact HPL and Corian is how damage is repaired. A damaged compact panel swaps out dry. A Corian surface is sanded and repolished in place. Both are valid; the choice depends on whether the facility can accommodate wet-trade access for a repair or needs a fast dry swap.
The Specification Checklist
Work through these before signing off a quote.
- Confirm the material is compact, not decorative HPL on board. Ask to see a cut edge. A compact panel is the same dense material all the way through. A lighter substrate visible in the cross-section means it is not compact.
- Specify thickness against the span, not against budget. The cost difference between 12mm and 20mm is small. The cost of a failed installation is not.
- Include edge detail in the order, not as a site instruction. Post-formed edges cannot be retrofitted.
- Put cutout corner radii on the drawing. Verbal instructions do not survive subcontracting.
- Confirm panels ship from the same production batch. Colour consistency across a large surface depends on it.
- Match the backsplash from the same batch. A backsplash ordered separately, even in the same colour code, can drift visibly.
- Ask who does the cutouts. If the supplier supplies only and the cutouts are done on site, confirm who is responsible for radius compliance.
