Toilet Partition Pilaster Shoes & Feet in Cairo
The pilaster shoe is the smallest component in a toilet partition system and one of the most overlooked. It sits at the base of every pilaster, sets the panel height off the floor, and determines whether the bottom of your partition stays dry or sits in standing water. Get it wrong and you have a corrosion point, a cleaning problem, and eventually a structural failure at the base of the frame. This page explains what pilaster shoes and feet do, what to specify, and why the detail matters more than most partition specs acknowledge.
What Pilaster Shoes and Feet Actually Do
Protecting the panel base from water
In any commercial toilet block, the floor gets wet. Mop-water, splashing, condensation from cold surfaces, and cleaning chemicals all reach floor level. A partition pilaster that sits directly on the floor tile has no gap between its base and the water that sits there. Even compact HPL, which does not absorb water through its face, can be attacked at a cut base edge if that edge sits in pooled liquid for extended periods.
A pilaster shoe creates a gap. The pilaster base is held at a set height above the floor level, and the shoe itself provides the structural contact. The shoe is designed to be the sacrificial component: if anything corrodes or degrades at floor level, it is the shoe, which can be replaced without touching the panel.
Levelling and adjustment
Commercial floor finishes are rarely perfectly level. A pilaster shoe with an adjustable height allows the installer to set each pilaster plumb and at the correct height regardless of floor variation under it. Without adjustment, a pilaster on a floor with 5mm of variation either has an uneven gap at the base or sits tilted. In a row of cubicles, this becomes visible immediately.
Types of Pilaster Shoe and Foot
Adjustable height shoe
The standard for commercial installations. A threaded post inside the shoe allows the height to be set in small increments during installation and locked off once the pilaster is plumb. Covers a typical adjustment range of 10mm to 20mm, which handles most commercial floor level variations.
Fixed height shoe
A fixed base fitting with no adjustment. Lower cost, faster to install on a perfectly level floor. Not recommended for most commercial projects because floor level variation is the rule rather than the exception. A fixed shoe that does not sit flat rocks under load and transfers stress to the pilaster base.
Continuous floor channel
An alternative to individual shoes where a stainless steel channel is set into the floor and the pilaster bases drop into it. Used in high-traffic public facilities where a rigid, flush, easy-clean base is a priority. The channel is the most robust option at floor level but requires a wet-trade installation step to set the channel before the partitions are installed.
Specification Guide
| Shoe type | Where it belongs | Metal spec |
|---|---|---|
| Adjustable height shoe | Most commercial toilet blocks, gyms, offices, clinics | Stainless steel SS304; SS316 for wet areas |
| Fixed height shoe | Level screeded floors, low-traffic environments | Satin aluminium |
| Continuous floor channel | High-traffic public facilities, airports, transport hubs | Stainless steel SS316 |
Shoe height must be confirmed against the floor finish. If tiles are being laid after the partitions are installed, confirm the tile thickness and adhesive bed depth so the shoe height can be set to give the right gap above the finished floor level. Getting this sequence wrong means either a shoe that is too high, creating an ugly gap, or one buried under the tile edge.
Why Cairo Facilities Get This Wrong
In most Cairo partition projects, the shoe is specified at the end and ordered from whoever has them. The result is frequently a zinc alloy or aluminium fixed shoe in a wet environment where an adjustable stainless shoe should have gone. The panel looks fine at handover. Within two years, the shoe base is corroded, the pilaster has moved slightly off plumb because the shoe is no longer a rigid base, and the door alignment has shifted enough to affect the lock and hinge function.
Specifying the shoe correctly at the start costs a fraction of one callout to realign a set of cubicle doors and replace corroded base fittings. For the full accessories range that supports the partition system, see our partition accessories hub page.
Working With Cairo House EG
We stock adjustable height pilaster shoes in stainless steel in standard sizes for 13mm and 20mm panel systems. For new partition projects, shoes are specified and supplied as part of the full hardware package alongside our HPL compact partitions. For replacement projects, bring the existing fitting or a photo and we will match it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a pilaster shoe? A pilaster shoe is the base fitting that sits at the bottom of a cubicle pilaster. It holds the pilaster base off the floor, allows height adjustment during installation, and protects the panel base from floor-level water. It is the sacrificial component at the most vulnerable point in the partition system.
Why does the gap height matter? The gap between the pilaster base and the floor finish determines whether floor-level water reaches the panel edge. Too small a gap allows water to sit against the base. Too large a gap looks unprofessional and is harder to clean. The correct gap is typically 10mm to 15mm above the finished floor.
Can I use a fixed shoe instead of an adjustable one? Only on a guaranteed level floor. Most commercial floor finishes have enough variation that a fixed shoe on at least one pilaster in a row will either rock or tilt the pilaster slightly off plumb. Adjustable shoes are the practical standard for commercial projects.
What metal should I specify for a wet area? Stainless steel grade 316 for any area where the shoe will be in frequent contact with water, including shower blocks, pool-side facilities, and wet-room changing areas. Grade 304 handles standard humid toilet blocks.
Does the shoe need to match the panel thickness? Yes. Shoes are sized to the pilaster width, which corresponds to the panel thickness. 13mm and 20mm systems take different shoe sizes. Confirm panel thickness before ordering.
What is a continuous floor channel? A stainless steel channel set flush into the floor that the pilaster bases drop into. It provides a rigid, flush, easy-clean base for high-traffic public facilities. It requires a wet-trade installation step before the partitions are fitted.
Can a corroded pilaster shoe cause door alignment problems? Yes. A shoe that has corroded and lost its structural integrity allows the pilaster to move slightly under load. Over time this shifts the door frame out of true, which affects hinge function and door alignment. Replacing the shoe early prevents a cascade of more expensive repairs.
Do you supply shoes separately or only as part of a full partition project? Both. We supply individual shoes for replacement projects and as part of a complete partition hardware package.
What is the standard adjustment range for an adjustable shoe? Standard adjustable shoes cover a range of approximately 10mm to 25mm, which handles most commercial floor level variations. For larger variations, confirm with us before ordering.
When should the shoes be set relative to floor tiling? If tiles are being laid after partition installation, confirm the finished floor level including tile thickness and adhesive depth before setting shoe heights. Setting shoes to the screed height and then tiling afterward is the most common cause of incorrect shoe height at handover.
